Dance is the art form in which human movement becomes the medium for sensing, understanding, and communicating ideas, feelings, and experiences. Dance has the power to communicate a story without using any words. I have always admired the art and beauty of dance and its similar capabilities it shares with photography.
This series of photographs depicts the story of Abi Gray, a young girl from Bolivia making it on her own to further her career as a dancer. As a viewer we see dance as a movement that speaks, which we find strangely beautiful. What we don’t see is the physical and emotional stress it puts on the body. As a dancer, the tool for your profession is your body. These images capture unguarded moments through the practices, teachings, and the behind the scenes of a performance as we get a glimpse into the unspoken competitiveness to dance.
